Dear Reader,
Thanks for being a free subscriber to The Three Taverns.
Do you remember the sit-com Cheers on television in the 80’s? The theme song “where everyone knows your name” hit a chord with American viewers. Because we ALL long for a sense of place.
Families are so vital to that healthy sense of place in our lives. Knowing who you are, where you are from, the family lore and stories provide a huge stabilizing force in life. When that is missing it creates instability, abandonment, trauma, fear and so many of the destructive forces in life.
That’s why people often frequent the same restaurants, bank branches, gyms, car dealerships, grocery stores, and church buildings….because they want to know and be known.
A tavern provides that sense of place for many. Sharing a good cigar, beer or cocktail and sitting together is part of being human. Spend time to find your “tavern” and develop that relationship network that is so vital for our well-being.
Knowing our place also sets boundaries where I know how NOT to overstep. This is also healthy, knowing your assignment leads to a sense of peace and purpose.

KNOWING OUR PLACE
Jesus said, "I will build my house." Emphasis on “I'“.
My job is to simply put out the welcome mat, not do the building.
Our pathology as humans, the cause of all dis-ease, is not knowing our place.
The Lord Himself told Peter to get up, kill and eat. (Acts 10:13)
Peter talks back..."No, Lord! I’ve never eaten anything unclean."
God corrects: "Do not call anything unclean that I have already cleansed."
There's only one Lord and I'm not Him.
We order God around because we don't like how He chooses to do things. We question His choices. But Jesus said, "I will build MY house."
Jesus is building. I am inviting.
We have turned this thing we call “church” into an enterprise. We have developed corporations with mega-pastors, huge budgets, and massive facilities that feel more like get rich schemes, shows and circuses rather than making disciples. It was never meant to be that, but instead it is a body that Christ is building so He can accomplish His plans in the earth.
All transformation comes from realizing our union with God provided to us by HIM. We are living FROM this union- because it is a gift- not FOR it.
So this world is our Love Lab, to see the finished work of Christ for every person. We were never told to invite anyone to church. You will never see that phrase in the scriptures. Another phrase you will never see in the scriptures is “going to church.” We have turned church into an event, an institution, when all along it is who we are, not where we go.
Therefore when I am at work, then church is at work. When I am signing a contract, or painting a house, or playing a ballgame, or camping out with my kids, or fishing, then that is a church activity because I am church.
We invite others to know this Person, this Jesus who rules over all things, and He will build His house.
